At 17, most girls fall in love for the first time– and "Search For A Star" grand finalists Irish Malazarte and Rachelle Go are no different, except that the object of their affections are not boys, but music.

Irish, a BS Psychology student of Holy Angel University in Pampanga, loves music so much that she has been joining singing contests, even if the results have sometimes not been too good. In one particular contest, she tripped over the microphone wire and sent her sandals flying into the audience. "Laging may hindi magandang nangyayari," she laughs.

Now, Irish seems to have finally conquered the jinx as she prepares for the grand finals of "Search For A Star." She and Rachelle will be competing eight other finalists for R1 million in cash, a house and lot package and a contract with the Viva Artists Agency.

Iris says she wants to win the grand finals not so much for herself, but for her sister. Iris’s sister is mentally and physically disabled, and although she is 20, she has the mental capacity of a five-year-old. Winning the R1 million cash prize would help Irish fulfill her dreams of building a house for her sister and getting someone to care for her full-time. "Gusto ko yung maraming mag-aalaga sa kanya," says Iris.

For the grand finals, Iris –who has a husky voice that sounds very much like Jaya’s –will be singing "Bakit Ngayon Ka Lang."

Rachelle, who is from Pasig, is a first year International Business and Entrepreneurial Management student at San Beda College. Like Irish, she is a veteran of singing contests, having joined amateur singing competitions, Future Voice of the Philippines (1997), "Eat Bulaga’s Birit Baby" (1998) where she emerged second-runner up, and her church choir.

Since then, says Rachelle, a lot of people have recognized her. "Ang saya po," she says of the feeling. "Dati, ordinaryong tao lang ako, pero ngayon, marami nang nakakakilala sa akin."

Rachelle hopes that her experience in singing competitions will work in her favor come finals night. She has a lot riding on this contest. "I want to fulfill my dream of becoming a star (through this contest)," says the 17-year-old, whose favorite singers are Mariah Carey, Christina Aguilera, Regine Velasquez, Whitney Houston, Celine Dion, Beyonce, and Lani Misalucha.

Rachelle has enjoyed every minute of her experience as a grand finalist in "Search For A Star." But nothing can compare, she says, to the feeling she gets when her neighbors in Pasig gather around their house to watch her practice. "Para po akong nag-co-concert" she says. Soon enough, that’s probably what will be happening.

Both Iris and Rachelle are keeping their fingers crossed for the grand finals night tonight at the ULTRA. Which one of them will make it? Stay tuned to find out!
